The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is finalizing the Emissions Reduction and Reclamation (ER&R) program, which facilitates management, recycling and reuse of hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants in commercial and industrial heating, cooling and refrigeration systems. The new rule establishes requirements for large hvac air handling unit and refrigeration systems to install leak detection, address leaks in a timely manner and dispose of HFCs in an environmentally appropriate manner, and is designed to cut emissions of refrigerants and increase the reuse of HFCs.

EPA predicts that the rule would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 120 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent from 2026 to 2050. This is part of the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, which transitions away from HFCs and helps accelerate the adoption of more sustainable alternatives in industrial and commercial HVAC systems.

By driving the pace of change towards more environmentally-friendly refrigerants and energy efficient solutions, the rule illustrates the significance of sustainability in HVAC engineering: HVAC systems in industrial HVAC endeavors and commercial HVAC units alike.
